The Design Process in Fashion Product Development

The development and formulation of a design requires rigorous involvement and in most of the cases follows some or the other process. The process involved should be a course of action that would make reaching the goal very much easier and simpler. Design can be defined to conceive the idea for some artifact or system and/or to express the idea in a form. It would also mean reaching the goals within constraints. Here, the goals consist of the purpose like who is the design for? What is the use of the design etc. The constraints on the other hand are the materials and the platforms to be used. Overall it is a very challenging job to create a design that is aesthetic, creative and innovative at the same time.

 

If the designer is gifted with artistic talent and creativity then obviously the outcome is highly enhanced. Every individual has his own methodology for approaching the problem but even then a designer or a group of designers develop a specific format which assist them in making their task much simpler. This method can then be worked upon in order to develop and improve it for the best of purposes. Irrespective of the stages in the design process there are certain factors which have to be dealt with before starting the works. Some of these may be:

 

  • Identify the target market – The market that a firm is catering to is segregated on the basis of gender, age, social and economic segment. Here the market is a group of people or the consumers. Each market segment is going to have different requirements and expectations from a design and all of these have to be satisfied by the designer, in order to make it a success.

 

  • Maintaining an Identity for the brand – Every company has a specific look and caters to a particular clientele. The price ranges are also fixed since generally they cater to a specific target market. All this has to remain more or less constant so that the company has a proper brand identity.

The design process in a nutshell and a very basic form may constitute of the following stages. These stages may overlap or may be treated as separate units. The designer only has the prerogative for deciding on these matters.

For starters these stages can be summarized as:

 

Research & Analysis

 

Before getting to know the problem and understanding the task, if one simply jumps into it, the only outcome is going to be a disaster. We will not have to look far before we come at a dead end. Proper research and planning is very important before starting a project, however big or small it may seem. The question that might arise here is that how much time should be devoted to this particular stage and the answer to that would be, in a proportional manner. This proportion has to be maintained keeping in mind the various segments that we come across during designing. For example in case of apparel or fashion oriented products research could comprise of an adequate study of the current fashion trends and forecast. Fashion forecast may be customized according to the clients requirement or could be even accessed through existing ones in the market.

Concept

 

The concept is the most important part of the design process. It is the point from where the ideas are going to start and the basic shape of the design would be conceptualized. The ideas might spring upon a designer at any moment of time. The important thing to keep in mind is that the idea or concept should gel with the market. Any discordance at this stage might put question marks later on. This stage would also require the designer to work upon the mood board, theme board, color palette, trends and the entire outline of the collection.

 

Form

 

This is the stage where the actual work on the design starts. The physical structure, shape etc is determined and prototypes are created. The ideas and concepts decided and discussed earlier take form and shape. Thus for the first time we can see how the product is going to look like. The consumers see only the product but the success of the product and the design depends on careful and sincere planning, research and proper production decisions. In case of the fashion industry this is the stage where sampling of the designs is initiated.

 

Checks and Tests

 

The Form of the design that is almost ready will never be successful unless we perform various tests which can also be called as quality inspections at various stages of production. The quality checks examine the design from various angles like aesthetics, performance, durability, strength, functionality etc. Only a design that passes these tests and checks will be sent for the final examination; that conducted by the customer or the consumer.

 

Thus design and designing both comprise of an ideal blend of art, aesthetics, creativity, strategic project management, good research, wonderful analysis and mind blowing execution. After this the designs success is handed over to the retail professionals who pour in their competencies of smart visual merchandising, excellent selling skills, and brilliant advertising and promotions.

Frantic Fashion & Australia’s Invisible Designers

The majority of Australians will work, sleep and die in the garments of the mass market. Yet, as Ian Griffiths has termed it, the designers of these garments are ‘invisible’ (2000). To the general public, the values, opinions and individual design processes of these designers are as unknown as their names. However, the designers role is crucial in making decisions which will have impacts throughout the life of the garment. The high product volume within the mass market ensures that even a small decision in the design process to source a particular fabric, or to use a certain trim or textile finish, can have a profound environmental or social effect. While big companies in Australia have implemented some visible strategies for sustainability, it is uncertain how these may have flowed through to design practices.

To explore this question, this presentation will discuss preliminary findings from in-depth semi-structured interviews with Australian mass market fashion designers and product developers. The aim of the interviews was to hear the voice of the insider to listen to mass market designers describe their design process, discuss the Australian fashion industry and its future challenges and opportunities, and to comment on what a ‘sustainability’ for their industry could look like. These interviews will be discussed within the framework of design philosopher Tony Fry’s writing on design redirection for sustainability.

Fashion is full of fleeting trends and new fads, and adapting to them to look stylish throughout the year. And every year there are clothes that one stocks up according to what is ‘in’ that season, and tosses out what’s not. But then again there are some styles and trends that stay on, and leave fashionistas wanting to embrace them a little more. 2012 did pass on some of these fashionable trends to explore the options this year too.

2012 saw a splash of bold and bright colors, neon pinks, fluorescent green, electric blues, and gave rise to the color blocking trend. Full-on suits became popular in mono-colors and prints. It was also the year when it was raining all leather on the fashion scene. Another super comfy fad was of pajama styled pants, printed pants, oxblood colored dresses, peplums, and, baroque patterns that were found flaunting by people everywhere.

Enduring Fashion Inspiration II – Greece

Greece is relatively a small country in the Eastern Europe. A country of eminent thinkers, manners, costume, and civilized wisdom has put the country at the global forefront. Archaeological finds of Greece have created a good source of Greek era especially related to their clothing styles. Greek costumes are a part of their rich cultural heriditary and history. Pictorial evidences exhibit the clothing fashion of ancient Greeks artistically, and creatively illustrated on vases, pots, and statues.

Greek apparels are artfully arranged pieces of clothes folded, tucked, pinned, strapped or belted in position. Simple borders fall into appealing patterns when arranged as long chiton robes. Embroidery was also used to embellish their garments, make fabric edges, and create border effects. Clothing styles of Greece has also influced the fashion culture of other nations. With a flurry of ruffles, pleats, and drapes, Greek clothing displays a spectacular look in fashion shows. The most interesting aspect of Grecian clothing is that it can be twisted, tied, and wrapped to create different looks.

Modern interpretation of ancient Greek costumes have an amazing, graceful look, and charm. Sheer, light and drapping Greek inspired outfits bring together the power of feminity and elegance.

The Couture Client as Patron of the Art of Fashion

The period between the two world wars is considered to be haute couture’s first golden age. At this time, the leading patrons of the art of fashion were sophisticated and cosmopolitan women who traveled constantly between Paris, New York and resort towns such as Biarritz and Palm Beach, feeling equally at home in all these places. Paris was the host city for fashion culture. As Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) simply puts it, fashion “must always be made to be French.” i

 

From the early decades of the twentieth century, hundreds of thousands of tourists appointed Paris their playground. Traveling in luxurious ships, wealthy tourists arrived for extended stays, thirsty for high culture, avant-garde art and haute couture. “Buying is of as much importance as sightseeing in this enchanting city”, suggested Thérèse and Louise Bonney in their Shopping Guide to Paris. ii Worldly women, who believed in the theatrical facet of clothes, turned to couture as means to display their good taste and influence people.

 

The Honorable Mrs. Reginald Fellowes (1890-1962), known as Daisy, was a half French, half American fashion icon starting in the 1920s. Her sleek and modern style found its ideal match in Chanel’s deceptively simple clothes, which she adorned with enormous jewelry. Daisy Fellowes was known for ordering the same dress in different colors and for her obsession with details such as working pockets.

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Showcases Creativity of Designers

Asia’s biggest business of fashion event, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week 2010 (WIFW), introduced, from 24 through 28 March 2010 an assortment of striking collections from 130 designers on the runway and the exhibition areas. With 43 shows and 130 stalls, the premier event offered five enthralling days of inspiration, ingenuity and imagination aligned with business opportunities. The event which is a fashion kaleidoscope brought a diversity of talent on the runway. The show highlighted its multicultural philosophy with ensembles that held the commercial appeal all under one roof at NSIC Exhibition Complex. WIFW is the perfect platform that allows style gurus to showcase their collection to domestic and international buyers, media, design schools and fashionistas. Most importantly, it lets the industry know what’s ‘in’ and what’s’ out’ for the season.

 

Though there were indeed a large number of designers, whose collections made it to our short list, but even this list had to be further pruned to only 12 designers, who could be accommodated in our present write-up.

 

Young Masaba’s Exuberated Festivity Creates Festival Masala

 

Probably the youngest of the lot, Masaba is known for her patchworks and colours. Her collection exuberated festivity and excitement as her face on the ramp. It was a festive traditional line with a lot of velvet coupled with silks. Silhouettes included dhotis and angrakhas. She, yet again, proved that she belongs to the talented new lot of the promising few, as she showcased her creations at the WIFW NW 2010. This was a collection of men’s and women’s couture, with extensive use of velvets and silks. It gave a sneak-peek into the Rajasthani culture.

 

The antique gold embroidery, beadwork and zari added a dramatic touch. What really caught our attention were her mul silk sarees with stripes on pleats and plane border pallus. The highlight was saris with appliqued pockets. Multi fabric churidaar sleeve blouses, patch worked angrakhas with dhoti pants were a super hit on the ramp. The patchwork, doriwork and gold embroidery on a colour palette of sindoor red, leaf green with whites gave the collection a traditional yet rustic appeal. The collection is sure to catch the attention of Indian styleconscious sari wearers and is aimed at appealing the Middle-eastern market.

 

Tarun Tahiliani Returns to Craft

 

Tarun Hahiliani’s collection is the refection of Indian craft. The surface treatments clearly show the values, richness, workmanship and the role of Indian craft in fashion. The designer has again successfully explored our traditional textiles and embroideries and applied it in Indo Western as well as Indian ethnic silhouettes. Fitted structured jackets were combined with drapery bottoms to create the elusion of IndoWestern drapes. Traditional saris were draped with both short length waist coats and long tailored coats to lend richness to the clothes and make the collection look truly global. Trademark sari drapes, embroidered belts paired with clunky platform shoes, long tailored coats with kaftans were adding a masculine chic look. The designer played smartly with various surface treatments like quilting, chikankari, and prints with natural dyes.

 

The colour palette varies from deep honey golds, ambers, Prussian blues, wine reds to transparent black, earthy brown, shades of green and blue. His menswear collection was based on classic silhouettes which were again reworked to create the traditional look. The coats, achkans and bundies with wide pants were very much prominent with colours like mushroom, charcoal, chocolates and blacks. The collection certainly reminds us of our traditional route and has a sense of pride for our cultural values.

Women’s Clothing Trends for spring 2010

Fashion experts and ramp show trends are suggesting that 2010 will bring back a lot of the older styles that were once popular. Some of these trends might not seem so appealing but in later months you will see them all over the place. Womens clothing trends are always evolving and changing. Some trends in womens clothing last but just a mere second in the fashion world and other trends make monumental history. It is up to you to decipher what trends suit your body and make you look attractive.

 

One noticeable aspect of tshirts this year is that shoulder pads are coming back in fashion. Yes they were a big hit for Womens clothing in the 1970s and 80s. This style makes you look taller and well defined. This trend in womens clothing would look proportionate on average and tall women. Short women tend to look butch in this type of womens clothing so it is generally not recommended for them. Chain embellished tshirts are also going to be trendy in the next couple of months. Even formal wear have started appearing with long dangly punk styled chains. Some chains come attached to the tops and others can be removed and used on other womens clothing. Black chains look really cool with white colored tees and blouses. The idea is to look punk and feminine at the same time.

 

This spring expect to see a lot of mint green and coral combinations. This combination will be offered in makeup, womens clothing, shoes and more fashionable accessories. These colors of womens clothing look extremely attractive on olive skinned women. Peaches and pink colored clothing suit women with lighter skin tones. Nude colors are also going to be fashionable colors for womens clothing but you have to be careful or you can look washed out and drab.

 

Another blast from the past are fringes. Fringes are being adding to tights, tops, skirts, and other womens clothing. This was last fashionable during the 80s and it seems like it would actually be a hit with certain types of womens clothing. It is a different look and can be horrible on one person and great on the next. Its important to get a friends perspective when buying womens clothing that is so different. They should be able to tell you honestly if it suits you or not. Then based upon your own opinion and theirs you can decide whether you want to invest in this type of womens clothing for your wardrobe.

 

Double denim is the latest trend in France and should be a UK fashion trend by the end of this year. You need to wear a denim top and something denim below to pull off a double denim look. You could opt for denim skirts, shorts, pants or overalls to wear below. Above you could wear a tshirt with a denim jacket unbuttoned or tied in a knot across the stomach. You could experiment with this trend if you have a number of denim Womens clothing in your wardrobe. By mixing and matching you could see which combination looks best for the double denim look. Era of Gothic Dress Culture

Gothic Dress is a stark black or dark style of clothing worn by the members of the Goth subculture. Gothic fashion clothing, which is considered by many as a protest against the extravagance, can be described as a profusion of dark velvets, fishnets, lace, tight corsets, gloves and leather shaded with scarlet. Gothic clothing also features Dark make up such as black lips, dark eyeliner, dark finger-nails and black dyed hair.

The Gothic time dress is usually divided into two periods, Early Gothic period (1200-1350) and Late Gothic period (1350-1450). The outfits in the Early Gothic period were more sophisticated, graceful and simpler in cut than the Romanesque period. Sleeves used to be tight and the forearms were given more importance. Minimal trimmings on the Gothic clothing were also a feature of the Early Gothic period. The Gothic dresses were usually longer and the necklines were deep. Styles changed quickly during the Late Gothic period. The period moved from the earlier flowing draperies that metamorphosed, into fabrics that kept on becoming more and stiffer with the passage of time. During the 15th century, the extremes were mostly in the upper silhouette. Crisp pleats, tight belts, padded doublets, leg-o-mutton sleeves were also some of the important features of the Gothic clothing in the Late Gothic period.

 

In the Early Gothic period, men wore hair at a sensible length often in a bob to the jaw line with a bang across the forehead. Men often bleached their hair as blond hair was popular. Few men wore beards. In the Late Gothic period, men wore hair bobbed with neatly curled ends. Young girls in both periods wore their hair loose, flowing upon their shoulders. But after marriage, they used to confine their hair in a bun at the nape. They also used to wear many types of hair pieces, such as wimple and gorget, to cover it.

Gothic corset is an important piece of Gothic dress. It shapes the body of a girl like an hourglass. It was very popular during the Victorian and medieval ages. Even today, Gothic corset is widely popular as even today, hourglass shape of a girl’s is considered as aesthetic and flattering. At the outset, a Gothic corset was very uncomfortable to wear. It is only with the passage of time that the garment became more soft and convenient to wear.

 

Gothic outfits like fishnets are summer temperature friendly. Fishnets can be worn on arms, legs or even as shirts and jumpers. Cotton bloomers, lace-trimmed long skirt and flowing gauzy skirts are some of those parts of Gothic clothing that are very comfy to wear in the summer. Men wear shirts with ruffles, buckles and lacing that look just like pirate shirts. In summer, male Goths wear light natural fiber shirts and short black trousers, accessorized with wide-brimmed hats, black umbrellas and silver ornaments. Gothic clothing is incomplete without Gothic boots. Female Goths usually wear dark black boots with high heels, while Gothic men wear dark black flatted boots, which are usually heavy. However, one can also come across Goths wearing bloody-red boots.

Colour Craze!!!

Colours are the phenomena of visual insight. One cannot hear, taste or feel the colour, the only way to recognize the colour is to see it. A colour is a means of nonverbal communication and says a lot more than you can ever imagine.Colour is a fundamental consideration in the design process. Colour can also affect someone’s ability to concentrate or to focus well. Colour can also have an effect on the way someone appears to look in the clothing they wear. It is often the first element that is noticed about a design and influences how the garment or collection is perceived. Colour is often the starting point of the design process. Gender and personality are the most common factors for determining the type of colours a person will wear. Males are typically dressed in dark colours such as blue, black, green, gray, red, and brown. These colours are usually worn in various shades but they still consist of these primary hues. Females typically wear lighter colours such as pink, yellow, cyan, lime green, orange, and peach. Women and girls also wear the darker colours that are normally associated with men but men normally do not wear lighter colours associated with women.

Colour also has an Impact on:

 

  • Your apparent shape
  • Your apparent weight
  • Your apparent personality
  • Your emotions

 

Psychological Properties:

 

The eleven basic colours have fundamental psychological properties that are universal, regardless of which particular shade, tone or tint of it you are using. Each of them has potentially positive or negative psychological effects and which of these effects is created depends on the relationships within colour combinations. Colours can warm up, cool down, make practical or impractical, create impact or camouflage. It has been determined by medical science that colour can influence the viewer’s hormones, blood pressure and body temperature. Every colour is having a positive as well as negative effect; negative effect shows when it is mixed with lighter or darker shade). Colour can have a profound effect on one’s mood as well as their level of energy. The psychological properties of the eleven basic colours are as follows:

RED-Physical
Positive: Physical courage, strength, warmth, energy, basic survival, stimulation, masculinity, excitement.

Negative: Demanding, aggression, strain.

 

BLUE– Intellectual
Positive: Intelligence, communication, trust, efficiency, modern, duty, logic, coolness, reflection, calm.

Negative: Coldness, reserve, lack of emotion, unfriendly.

 

YELLOW– Emotional
Positive: Optimism, confidence, self-esteem, emotional strength, friendliness, creativity.
Negative: Irrationality, fear, depression, Immaturity, anxiety, suicide

 

GREEN– Balance

 

Positive: Harmony, balance, refreshment, universal love, rest, renewal, reassurance, environmental awareness, peace symmetry.

Negative: Boredom, heavy, stagnant, blandness.

 

VIOLET– Spiritual

 

Positive: Spiritual awareness, containment, vision, luxury, authenticity, truth, quality.
Negative: Introversion, decadent, suppression, inferior.

 

PINK
Positive: Physical tranquillity, nurture, warmth, femininity, love, sexuality, survival of the species.
Negative: Inhibition, emasculation, physical weakness.

 

GREY
Positive: Neutral

Negative: Lack of confidence, dampness, depression, lack of energy.

 

BLACK-

Positive: Sophisticated, glamour, secure, emotional safety, efficiency.

Negative: Domination, coldness, menacing, heavy, cruelty

 

WHITE

Positive: Hygiene, sterility, clarity, purity, cleanness, simplicity, sophistication, efficiency.

Negative: Sterile, elitist, coldness, barriers, unfriendliness.

 

BROWN-

Positive: Serious, warmth, Nature, earthiness, reliable, support.

Negative: humourless, heavy, lack of sophistication.

Personal Colouring:

 

The colours play an important role and one should think before adding the colours. Once the desired effect is achieved half the job is done! Contrast colours in clothes looks stunning and catches the attention in its own way and tones of the same colour also adds a lot of smartness and adds a chic feel.In viewing a design, colour often has an overriding visual impact over other design considerations. A garments message can be completely altered by the colour; for example: a severe cut can be softened if it is executed in a candy pink.

 

  • Simply wear the same colour / shades of the same colour (that is, a suit/top and bottom) from head to toe. Create interest by wearing different textures .You could also choose a shirt in a brighter/lighter shade. Now youve created a vertical Line-slimming. This will also emphasise your face.
  • If a person wants to look taller then he or she should wear a light colour from head to toe. Also try to match shoes to hemline colours.
  • A person will also look taller when he/she repeats the same colour tones in top and bottom. For example medium top and medium bottom.
  • A Person can minimize their upper torso when he/she wears a darker top and lighter bottom.
  • A Person can minimize their lower torso when he/she wears a lighter top and darker bottom.
  • A person can appear shorter / heavier when she/he wears a different colour in your skirt/slacks/trousers, hose / socks and shoes.

 

Be Colour Crazy

 

Be colour conscious right down to your toes. Sometimes you only need to change the colour to make it work! It will pay dividends. Our fashion colour choices say a lot about the image we are trying to portray and how we feel about ourselves. Care must be taken with the basic colour of the garments if unusual colour accessories are to be worn to advantage. Check the colour of the fabric against your face. Hair, eyes, and skin colouring must be taken into account, plus the occasion for day or evening wear. Generally, the smaller and the thinner person, the lighter the colour she should wear, with the reverse for taller, heavier types. The right colours can make your skin tone appear more even, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and dark circles and make you look brighter and healthier. While on the other hand wearing a colour which isn’t so good for you can make you look tired, dull and even ill. Create your own colour story without restricting yourself to just two or three basic colours. Choose colours which flatter and enhance you, not colours you have to work hard to wear to look alive. Only through experience will you become selective about colours and tones which compliment or do nothing for you.
